Cocoa beans are the seeds of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree, originating in South America. In Aztec culture,not only drinks and foods made from crushed cocoa beans were valued, cocoa beans even served as currency. Spanish explorers brought cocoa back to Europe in the 16th century. The author of the botanical name (which translates as „food of the gods“) is a swedish naturalist Carl Linne. Cocoa is also one of the „super foods“ and contains around 300 different chemically identifiable substances.
